J. Roop signed, Lancaster County PA, longrifle. Rifle is signed on both lock and barrel. Rifle was originally flint and converted to percussion during period of use. Barrel is 43-1/4" long, approximately 45CAL, and 13/16" across the flats. It is brass mounted and has a nice engraved patchbox and side plate. Metal is a smooth brown patina with some pitting around nipple, which is to be expected. Condition of the stock is very good. There are a few slivers missing on the left rail and a few thin cracks on the right. There is an old period repair on the left side of the forearm that was done with copper staples. The crack is only on the left side and does not go through to the right. The butt still has a lot of old dark finish. Other than the old repair to the forearm, there are no other repairs. This is a very good example of a Lancaster County rifle. Shipping and insurance will probably run $75 to $100. I pad the rifles and strap them to a 1X4 and use a new telescoping box. It costs a little bit more, but makes for a much safer shipment.
